Becoming the CEO of Your Own Business

Whether you have been in the real estate business for 1 year or 20 years, YOU are the CEO of your business.  Sometimes agents work “in” their business vs. “on” their business.  How do you step back and reset your CEO role of your business? Or how do you become the CEO of your business from the starting block? We are going to break that down for you here in a few simple steps.

The CEO: Create Your Ladder

First, you need to create your ‘Ladder’ as this is the foundation of your business. Ask yourself:

  • What is your WHY?
  • Who in your life is supportive and helps you to stay grounded?
  • Who in your business life do you lean on for support?
  • Why are you in real estate?

Now, let’s talk about the steps on your ladder. Each step represents your natural progression but remember, we all start at the bottom and work our way up.

  • The Intern: Signs you’re ready to move up could be that your not asking as many questions OR that the questions you’re asking are different
  • The Janitor: This is where you start to experience a lot of momentum and others really start to notice you as a Realtor
  • Internal Service Provider Role: You’re busy and getting to learn a lot more tools that you’ll eventually leverage off to someone else as you continue to grow!
  • The Closer: You’ve run out of leads and are in full sales mode trying to find more business (congrats!) and you learn to fully embrace the word ‘no’
  • Project Manager/Ops Director: You determine where your strengths lie and really tap into those…you’re more focused and your goal is to scale your business
  • CEO: You made it! Your eyes are on the future, you have a staff and people look to you for assistance. The more you grow, less of you is needed.

As with anything, there will be some troubleshooting along the way. Stay focused on your ladder and not anyone else’s because that’s where we start to compare and the self-doubt creeps in. Learn from your mistakes and ask someone for help instead of trying to do everything yourself. Reach out to another agent or your broker, or consider hiring a coach as a second set of eyes to help you see what you don’t see. Regardless of what you do, just take massive action and just keep climbing.
