Open vs Traditional Floor Plans

Home styles and layouts are constantly changing. People all over the world live in so many different types of homes with different types of layouts. Have you ever seen the show Tiny House Nation? Well, it’s a tv show that shows off tiny homes. Now these homes are very..well, tiny and they have a unique floor plan to fit all of the necessities. An open vs. traditional floor plan comes down to the needs and wants of the homeowner.

That being said, open floor plans in homes are becoming increasingly popular in homes today. An open floor plan creates spaces in which no walls exist between the different areas of the home. So a living room, kitchen, and dining room may all share one large space. A traditional floor plan on the other hand is the exact opposite of that. In a traditional floor plan, each designated area of the home is a separate space, enclosed with walls. Each floor plan is beautiful and choosing between the plans comes down to a matter of taste.

Open Floor Plans

Open floor plans are often associated with a modern style. In fact, many lofts or industrial-style homes have open floor plans. Despite the modern style, it can be difficult to design as the large space needs to look cohesive. So the furnishings for a kitchen need to coordinate with the living room, dining room, and even the kitchen. Open floor plans allow for great accessibility. Without walls to break up the room, movement can happen more easily from space to space. Open floor plans do have limits on privacy. Without doors and walls to keep rooms separate, it can be difficult to carry out tasks without others seeing you.

Traditional Living/Closed Floor Plans

Traditional living or closed floor plans allow for each room to have an individual style, color, or theme. Not every detail needs to match throughout the home to keep a cohesive style making designing much easier. Closed floor plans can feel smaller than they are and can cause the home to look chopped up. But having enclosed spaces can also help rooms feel cozy and warm. With walls and separate spaces, a closed floor plan has much more privacy than an open floor plan. Walls and doors offer more sound-proofing allowing individuals to do whatever tasks they please without feeling intruded upon.

Both floor plans have advantages and disadvantages. Making a decision on which floor plan you like is up to your own taste and what you want!
